The only stratum source on the peninsula is the Russian Well, presumably named after the Russian monks who lived in the flats. It was later named after Abbot Halbik Ciprián of Tihany. Getting access to drinking water has been a laborious job for centuries. it was carried on foot from Lake Balaton by the women of Tihany. Donkey supplies provided water for the abbey. In addition to the spring, a landslide occurred in the winter of 1996-97, which swept away the path and part of the retaining wall, and since then the spring water has been leaking in several places.
