VÁNDOR VIDÉKI (01/19/2020)
At the border of Salgótarján-Zagyvaróna, on the 423 m high Castle Hill, once stood Zagyvafő Castle, which today has only very few remnants. The castle was probably built at the end of the 13th century by the Zagyvafő family from the Kacsics family, and was already in ruins in the 15th century. It was rebuilt in the 1440s by Czech Hussite mercenaries. They were in their possession until 1460, when the royal army recaptured it, and King Matthias personally participated in the siege and was wounded. During the siege, the castle was largely burnt down, and archaeological evidence suggests that it was being reconstructed to some extent, but by 1478 it was completely ruined and no longer built. Nevertheless, it is a nice excursion to visit the remains of the castle in the unique natural environment - the Karancs-Medves Landscape Protection Area and the Novohra-Nógrád Geopark - in beautiful woods. It is advisable to approach through the cemetery, where there is also a beautiful view and an interesting church waiting for us.
