On the western edge of the Tokaj Mountains lies the beautifully called village of Boldogkőújfalu, which is one of the geometric centers of Europe. To the east of the village, on the southwestern side of the Village Hill, lies a grassy field dotted with bizarre boulders, which is a nature reserve. The name Stone Sea is not entirely correct, which we will explain below! In the vicinity of Boldogkőújfalu, approx. There are andesite rocks (Baskó Andesite Formation) formed 13 million years ago (Sarmatian period of the Miocene earth history), which formed in the form of huge lava flows. During the flow of hot and viscous andesite lava, it was cut into blocks and blocks and solidified and cooled. After the formation of lava flows, the expansion of the cracks between the blocks was taken over by external forces (e.g., frost, wind, flowing waters), which resulted in the formation of separate andesite blocks. As a result of further weathering processes, the edges of the blocks were rounded and the cracks between them were filled with fine clay particles in which the vegetation was also settled. Some researchers also suspect the wave of Lake Pannon and post-volcanic processes behind the formation of the Stone Sea. The term stone sea is not quite accurate, as real stone seas were formed during the frost fragmentation of the Earth Age Ice Age (Pleistocene). Since the andesite blocks of Boldogkőújfalu did not develop in this way, we use the term “only” the pseudo-stone sea, ie the “pseudo-stone sea”. The castle of Boldogkő, built on a “taréja” of aggregated rhyolite tuff, is beautiful from the stone sea. akovekmeseselnek.hu
