St. George Chapel

Well preserved christian ruins from very early period of building constructions of the site.

The rotunda was built here as a relic of St. George, received by King St. Stephen from the Byzantine emperor Basileos, probably before the construction of the cathedral. It was rebuilt into an octagon in the 13th century. The Middle Ages were a well-known, famous pilgrimage site. Bishop Albert Vetési (+1486) was buried here. As a result of the battles and fires of the Turkish era, it was destroyed by the beginning of the Baroque era. In 1957, by chance, they found their ruins. Inscription engraved on the threshold: “In limie no sedeto” (do not sit on the threshold). According to legend, Prince St. Imre made a vow here.
