I absolutely love college. Then again, I absolutely hate it. Let me start out by saying that college isn’t for everyone and you do not need a college education to be successful. However, it is necessary for certain career paths (i.e., professor, teacher, engineer, etc.). There is a belief in America that after high school kids need to go to college, then go to grad school or get a job, buy a house, etc., but this is not the only path to success. College is just one of many options high school graduates have to continue working toward their life’s goals. Many students do not realize that once they’re in college and living on their own (at least most of them will be) they don’t have to follow their family’s wants and wishes for them. People come into college thinking they have to be a doctor or lawyer because that’s what their parents want them to be. As a college student, they can choose to do what they want when they want and how they want to plan for their future. This is what I love about college; you have the freedom to be who you want to be and an opportunity to grow and better yourself in a new environment filled with all kinds of people. Money: this is what is not so great about college. Granted, there are college students who seem to be living well despite the student loans hanging above their heads. Some are lucky enough to have parents who can afford to put them through college and give them spending money. However, many college students work during the school year to afford school or have some extra money which can put a damper on your free time. To be frank, college is outrageously expensive. This article (Why College Is So Expensive, And How To Fix It) is one of many that attempts to explain the problem of the cost of college education in America. There are several other reasons to like or dislike college, and much of it will come down to where you decide to go to school. Each school is different but it is important to put yourself in a place where you will have the opportunity to connect with people who have different beliefs and ideas than your own so you can see that there’s still a lot more out there in the “real world” to learn and experience.
