A Regiment of 49th Bengal Native Infantry was raised at Karachi during the First World War and it was disbanded after the same war. Kaji Nazrul Islam was Company Quarter Sergeant Major. A cenotaph is located in the College Square eastern side. On 4th Sunday of November a memorial function is organised under the Rajya Sainik Board, Government of West Bengal.
