The institute provides the nation the basic geosciences data both for resource exploration and academic pursuit. Historical researchers visit the library for its archival collections. The Library opens at 9.30 A.M. It contains rare and valuable archival documents from 16th century to early 20th century.

One of the oldest and largest libraries in Kolkata. All Books and magazines related to earth science are archived and available for reading. Octagonal shaped Reading room is simply awesome.

Central Library: In 1856, Sir Thomas Oldham had realized the importance of holding a library in GSI to shelf a large number of books and publications published elsewhere and housed in the Asiatic Society. The Central Library of GSI was established in 1856 at Kolkata and it houses the richest collection of geoscientific literature in India. Currently it holds in its archive over 9 lakhs books, journals, maps etc. on various aspects of geosciences and allied subjects including 600 geological and related journal titles. The archival collection of books in English and other languages dating back to as early as 16th century constitute it a rare repository of geoscientific literature.nnMap production: GSI has been preparing the Geological maps for more than 150 years based on its primary database generated through geological mapping and laboratory studies. GSI being the nodal agency for the Government of India for the data on geo-science including minerals and other natural resources it has been disseminating data to the different stakeholders and public at large through publications of different geological and other thematic maps through its pan-India sale counters and portals as per the approved dissemination policy of Ministry of Mines. Map Printing Division is responsible for printing of thematic maps prepared by GSI using cartographic tools on GIS platform.nnPublication: The geoscientific data acquired by GSI are disseminated to the scientific community through various categories of publication. These include: Memoirs, Records, Bulletins, Paleontologia Indica, Special Publications, Miscellaneous Publications, Catalogue Series, Indian Geoscience Abstracts, Manual Series, Indian Journal of Geosciences, GSI News, etc.
