Kos minar has a great importance in history. This was an attempt to modernise the transport and postal system by Sher Shah Suri. He developed roads from Kolkata to Kabul. Installed Kos minars and constructed various Sarai (resting area or guesthouse). Kale Khan Sarai, lado Sarai, Begum Sarai, ajeeb Gunj Sarai etc are the examples of such guest houses. He introduced modern currency system and brought in various reforms.

Kos Minars like Milestones were installed on important routes at distance of roughly two miles for the guidance of travellers. Although the kos being used as measure of distance from Vedic times, the Kos Minars were first installed in India by Sher Shah Suri and were in continuous use upto the Mughal period. Later on the British introduced the Mile Stones. These Kos Minars were first installed on the routes from Agra to Ajmer, Agra to Lahore and Agra to Mandu (now in present day Madhya Pradhes ).

Many kos minars were built by Mughal emperors along the Grand Trunk (GT) Road, all the way from Agra to Ambala. And one of them is in National Zoological Park Delhi.nnKos minars are solid round pillars that stand on a masonry platform built with bricks.nChronicler Abul Fazl recorded in Akbarnama that in 1575 AD, Akbar issued an order to build a minar at every kos on the route from Agra to Ajmer as pit stops for travellers.nn1 Kos = 3 KM

Kos Minar is an ancient historical structure built by Sher Shah Suri, the Sur emperor during the 16th century in India, is the medieval form of today's milestones placed on the roads. They were the indicator of distance for the travelers, and have been built over several places in North India. One of them is currently placed inside the campus of the National Zoological Park, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
