Shri Rathinagireeswarar Temple, located at Thirumarugal, 25 kms from Thiruvarur, Tamil Nadu is a Padal Petra Sthalam - padigams by Saints Gna Sambhandar & Appar. . There are 278 Padal Petra Sthalams (Sung by Great Saivaite Saints (Appar, Sundarar, Gna Sambhandar & Manickavachakar).nMoolavar : Rathinagireeswarar , Manikka vannar; Ambal : Vanduvarkugzali; Theertham : Lakshmi theertham, Manicka theertham; Sthala vriksham : Marugal - a type of banana; Lord Shiva is syayambu(self manifested) with 5 tier Raja gopuram. One of the Madakoils by Chola King Kot chenga cholan.nnAs per the legend, once there was a familne in the kingdom of Emperor Kusakethu - who was an ardent Shiva devotee..He tried to help his subjects by offering whatever was in his granery and coffers. He did lot of yagas and yagnas - but to no avail. Frustrated, he tried to hang himself. Lord Shiva gave darshan to him and in around 10 kms radious of Thirumarugal, there was a rain of gems and diamonds for several days. The king requested the Lord to stay in Thirumarugal. Since there were heaps of precious stones around, the Lord came to be known as Rathinagireeswarar and Manicka vannar.nnA real life incident highlights the greatness of Saint Gna Sambhandar - which happened when he visited Thirumarugal temple: There was a mercant called Daman Chettiar in Vaippur and he had 7 daughters. His nephew who was poor sought the hand of one of them for maariage. Evading him, the Chttiar married off 6 of his girls to others. The last girl felt that it was unjust to ignore this boy on the basis of economic status and she eloped with him. They came to Thirumarugal and stayed ina choultry for the night so that they could get married next day. Unfortunately a deadly snake bit him and he died. The girl started crying inconsolably.Saint Gna Sambhandar who came there, saw the plight of the girl and pleaded with Lord Shiva of Thirumarugal with his pasurams and Lord Shiva granted the boy a new lease of life.Everyone was astounded by this miracle.nHence several boys / girls whose marriage gets delayed come to this temple and pray the Lord Rathinagireeswarar for help.nMust have darshan.nn.

I went to this temple a few years ago. A very serene and tranquil place. This was apparently my paternal grandma's family temple of worship and she hailed from a nearby village. I would rather go to a calm temple like this compared to some of the more popular yet, insanely crowded ones. The lighting inside could be improved but, the atmosphere there is something one must experience.
