Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

A truly unique experience. A must do if you ever plan to see Darjeeling - definitely the steam vs. diesel to get the ‘real deal’. Word of advice, close the windows! Hot coal can blow in the wind and into your face...! ud83dude06

Travelling to Darjeeling with childrennnWe opted for a stress free experience of Darjeeling. The main attraction was the UNESCO heritage listed ‘toy train’. A unique experience to ride on a train that was built in 1881, however I was disappointed with the significant amount of air and noise pollution it creates. I can see the importance of drawing tourism but surely there must be a way to make it less harmful for the 1.3 million population living there and of course the environment.nnThere are two options - Steam and Diesel trains. If you’re foreigner and cannot read Hindi, best to book through an agent (we used Clubside Tours & Travels) as it can be difficult to navigate online to purchase tickets. Moreover it’s usually booked out. If you want a decent driver that can communicate in English, contact the above agent and ask for Sonam - he was great! Note: if you are travelling with young children, it would be a good idea to bring ear plugs/muffs to block out the noise from the loud train honking sounds. Also close the cabin windows unless you want burning coal splatter all over your body.nnThe other main attractions we explored were temples, monasteries and tea estates. They were worth a visit!

Beautiful and wonderful places to visit. Many stay options is available hear. This is UNESCO world heritage site.

Can be booked from Silliguri to Darjeeling. A 80km approx trail will allow you to enjoy the scenic beauty.
