Kamar Tribe Dwelling Complex, IGRMS, Bhopal

Kamar is a small tribal group living in South eastern part of Raipur district of Chhattisgarh. Most of their villages are situated in forested hilly area. They prefer to built their houses in jungle or plain land near the natural water resources. According to them when god divided works to all the people, he gave bow and arrow to the Kamar and from then the Kamar live their life by hunting, gathering and cultivating land.nnTheir main occupation is shifting and dahya cultivation while basketry, hunting, collection of forest products and fishing are their subsidiary occupation. They make their houses by using sal, karra wood, bamboo and clay. They construct their houses by erecting wooden uprights and walls are made up with clay dough. The main room is divided into two parts called Khandghar and Bhitarghar, The inner room Bhitarghar is used for sleeping. and keeping household materials. The frontier room Khandghar is used as kitchen and as a place of worship. In the front portion there is a verandah called Osari and a small machan called Mandachha, constructed in front of the house and used for drying Mahua and also used as kitchen garden. The roofing is made up with the frame of Karrawood and bamboo with a thatching of chhind leaves. Door is made of knitted bamboo splits woven in check pattern.
