Shey Palace is built by 'Deldan Namgyal' a king of Ladakh as his summer retreat house in 1650 A.D.. The royal palace and shrine built in 16 th century A.D. enshrines the Du-Khang with the copper gilded statue of Lord Buddha rising to a height of three storeyed. The Palace has the largest Namgyal Chorten (Victory Stupa) in Ladakh, the top of which is made of pure gold. Shey used to be a Captical of Ladakh. Shey was abandonaed after Dogras of jammu kashmir conquered Ladakh. The royal family shifted to Stok Palace 1834 A.D.

Shey or shel is the first capital of Ladakh. The ruins above the present day palace was the palace built by the first king of ladakh Lachen spal ge gon around 10th century.nThe present day palace was later built during the reign of Mangal dynasty in 17th c.
