Taltala Public Library

Taltala is a neighbourhood in central Kolkata. One of the old neighbourhoods of the metropolis it is bound by Dharmatala in the north, Entally in the east, Park Street neighbourhood in the south and Janbazar and Chowringhee in the west. Many great celebrities have lived here, for example, Surendranath Banerjee, Durga Charan Banerjee, Jnanendra Nath Mukherjee, Hirendranath Mukherjee, Rezaul Karim, Dr. Moni Biswas, Dr Tamiz Khan, Narendranath Sen, Tripura sankar Sensastry, Sudam Banerjee, Nilmoni Mukherjee, Bijoy Singh Nahar, Benjamin Gomes, Syed Badruddoja and so on. No wonder residents were highly educated and therefore from the early times need for a public library was felt and in 1882 Taltala Public Library was established. Making it the oldest existing Public library of Calcutta. However, it appears to have fallen in bad times. The upkeep is poor and the shabby exterior is a let down. I think it requires a total make over considering its heritage.
