Pwd rest houses are excellent places to stay at and staying at these locations is a way of helping finance their maintenance.nnUnfortunately, chitkul's rest house was an absolute disapointment.nnBeing a foreigner, hiking around himachal and travelling by bus does not always make communications easy. Especially since communication between booking offices and caretakers on locations suffer also from network problems. I had been staying at ribba's pwd rest house a few days before reaching chitkul and had been very nicely and efficiently helped out by the officer in charge of booking. Knowing that i was going to chitkul, he kindly did what was necessary to book me in chitkul and assign me a room. But by the time i reached chitkul i was out of network and could not receive confirmation. Having encountered the same problem in ribba, i was confident the caretaker would take me in, check all my official documentation and permits, enter my name in the registry and eventually reach out to his superiors with a landline.nnWell, instead, i was told by the caretaker at chitkul's about pwd rest houses being official buildings and foreigners consequently not being allowed, and that anyway, price of room would not be current price but would be higher for foreigners. I was thus offered by the caretaker to stay at his personal homestay for 1000 rupies. I am not telling fibs here, and a fluent bilingual person on site obliged to act as translator so no misunderstanding was possible.nnMaybe i should have insisted that the caretaker called his superiors, but i was really taken aback by the caretaker's complete rebuttal and he seemed so sure of himself that, after some efforts on my part to explain i had been granted permission and was effectively booked, i eventually gave up. Maybe i was too tired. Moreover, the caretaker is, after all, an official representative of pwd administration and i thus assumed, wrongly as i now know, that chitkul's rest house had its own special set of rules.nnSo, no staying at chitkul's pwd rest house for me that night.nnWhen i got reconnected to the network the next morning, i received a message from the officer of the booking office who was checking up on me, making sure i had had a nice stay at chitkul's pwd rest house. For his kindness and consideration, i am forever grateful. He represents the true essence of himachal, the land of gods.nnNow, if you want to stay at chitkul's rest house, my advice is that you receive confirmation before you are out of network as the caretaker will not use his or any landline to call his superiors and will instead probably push you towards his personal homestay.nnThere is a fair chance that this misadventure be a recurring one.
