A few meters from Corso San Martino, half hidden and abandoned to neglect by the rulers, stands this small obelisk which indicates one of the measuring points used in 1760 by Gianluigi Beccaria to calculate the geographical coordinates of Turin.
A similar obelisk is located in Rivoli in the center of the roundabout at the end of Corso Francia and indicates a second point of detection: using them, Beccaria established that the 45th parallel passed through Piazza Statuto, making a mistake of just 3 ', with measurements and calculations, for the era, very accurate.
The obelisks rise above the original marble stones laid by Beccaria, which over time had been forgotten and covered by road pavements and brought to light only in 1808.
The obelisks are the subject of the inevitable metropolitan legends that would like them to be "summits" of imaginary magic triangles, as well as the nearby Frejus monument, not to mention the manhole which, a few meters away, serves to inspect a local valve of the Aqueduct but would even give direct access Hell.
It would take a bit of cleaning, cutting the branches that hide it, and a plaque explaining what it is, to enhance this piece of history, but we must hope for rulers who care more about the city.
The meridian chosen by the Piedmontese geophysicist and mathematician, Giovanni Battista Beccaria. The extreme is not exactly on the 45th parallel. This obelisk is also connected to black magic because this area is identified with one of the vertices of black magic, in fact it was used to bury the dead and for crucifixion.
IF YOU ASK FOR 100 TORINESI WHAT IS THIS MONUMENT OR WHAT DO ME SAYS OR WORK AGAIN ASKING IN WHICH CITY PASSING THE 45TH PARALLEL THINK YOU COULD WRITE A BOOK OF BARZELLETTE OR .........
HOLY IGNORANCE ... OTHERWISE THANKS TO THE TEACHING BODY AND THE STUDY PROVIDER
Absolutely neglected and neglected monument was erected to mark the crossing point of the 45 parallel. In fact, given that by tradition in this western part of the city we execute death sentences and buried the dead, the area assumed a sinister reputation and is currently identified with one of the vertices of the triangle of black magic, which many insist on see precisely in this small monument.
Beyond that indicator of the parallel 45 * this would be the entrance of the underworld for the lovers of black Turin ...
