Maurizio Bufalini born in Cesena on 4 June 1787, studied medicine at the University of Bologna and is still remembered today for having revolutionized the teaching method in the medical faculties.In his essay published in 1819, Foundations of analytical pathology, he supported the need for the examination of facts lay at the basis of medical science. In 1832 he returned to Cesena to practice his profession and in 1835 he was called to cover the chair of medical clinic in the school of S. Maria Nuova in Florence. Bufalini died in Florence in 1875 but always remained very attached to his hometown and, upon his death, he donated his entire scientific library to the Municipality of Cesena.

He was among the reformers of Italian medicine between the 40s and 60s. His work 'Fundamentals of analytical pathology' is still a cornerstone of medicine. He was a professor of medical clinic at the University of Florence for twenty years. Before moving to Florence, he had actively participated in the political life of Cesena in the ranks of the liberals. Piazza Bufalini, stone monument.
