The Norman Tower, known as the main tower, was built at the behest of the Norman Count Peter I in 1060. The Normans built only the first floor just for defensive purposes of the time, but later, in the Swabian period, with the advent of new techniques defensive, it was necessary to raise the tower that reached twenty-seven meters high, becoming an extreme refuge for the population. The fishermen called the Torre Normanna Torre Maestra because, in addition to performing a defensive function, it lent itself to the role of guiding ships in port.
