The neoclassical facade of the Doge's Palace was erected at the end of the 18th century as the Governor's seat on the site of a pre-existing monastery, and remodeled in its current forms, with access to the three internal courtyards, by the architect Pietro Marchelli. Renamed Salvador Allende Palace, it is the seat of the Province and Prefecture of Reggio Emilia. The Provincial Council room is adorned with fine tempera paintings by Prospero Minghetti, author of the four allegorical figures (Venus and Cupid, Music, Spring and Psyche) in the representative apartment of the Prefecture.
