To start with, the site is normally closed. We could nevertheless enter luckily due to works undertaken that day. The Castel was a favourite place of the emperor Federico II grace to the surroundings and building which got constructed under the supervision of the Florentine sculptor Fuccio. The building itself shows only little defensive structures and got used as hunting seat. It got heavily damaged in the earthquake of 1456 and subsequently decayed. There has been done work in past to build access to the ruins and a parking place, which all is closed nowadays. As this structure still has potential from my view and could get partially restored, it would be great if local and regional authorities realize this and take steps to awake the site from its hibernation. 4 stars for the site, the architectural details (which can be seen in Castel Del Monte in full beauty). Minus for the bad overall state regarding archeological care, closed status and obvious lack of vision of local and regional authorities to develop the site.

Wow

Absolutely a disappointment. We left Matera (about 30 km from Gravina) specifically to visit you but we found it closed and from the outside you could see the complete abandonment. Not to mention the non-existence of any signage indicating the direction.

Nothing interesting, empty remains of walls, and not very interesting in form.
