Obgyne (Obstetrician-gynecologist)
I just gave birth this month(Aug. 2019) in this hospital. When I knew that I was pregnant, I was very anxious to keep on going to this hospital for check ups since I cant speak Japanese well. But then my doctor (Yamada T. Sensei) and nurses are nice enough to explain and answer thoroughly all of my questions. (Which is a lot since this is my first pregnancy) They even told me to not hesitate to ask if I cant understand anything. Although there is one staff in the reception of obgyne that I didnt like.
Months had passed and I gave birth to this hospital. (Caution: if you want a painless or epidural, this is not the hospital for you since they dont provide those if you are normal, just natural birth.)
Since I had a natural birth, I stayed in the hospital for 6 days. I only had 2 hrs labor, nurses and my doctor didnt expect since this is my first pregnancy, they thought it will gonna take more time before I get fully dilated. Even if everything was unexpected, the nurse who tended to me during labor, I think her name was Ms. Miyoshi (三芳さん) was very calm on how she handled the situation when the baby was crowning already. There was also this nurse I wasnt able to ask her name, she helped me through my contractions on how to properly breathe and how to handle pain, which made my contractions a lot easier to bear. I’m very thankful for her because I think if other nurse took over me that time, then I think I wont be able to tolerate the pain I had during contraction. I am very very glad that she was there during my contractions.
The next day of giving birth, they taught us how to properly feed (different ways on how to breastfeed, etc), hold, bathe, literally take care of the baby. I asked many questions but again, they were hospitable and friendly enough to answer all of my questions and they also gave me advices on how to properly take care of the baby or how to do certain things easier or efficiently. Which was really helpful because I was able to take care of my baby without any hesitations or doubts on how to breastfeed, etc. because they taught me almost everything. I didnt expect to experience such kindness, I was very happy and satisfied that I chose this hospital.
Thank you again for the wonderful job!! I would def choose this hospital again in the future when I get pregnant! Haha
Horrible experience, unfriendly staff with no education of English. Unfortunate for a hospital residing in Tokyo and it's already 2019 where English should be a common language. Nevertheless, staff have no mean ing to help and choose to ignore a emergency warded in patient. The translator over the phone hang up the call thus even after all that travelling to the hospital result with no given assistant. -5 stars
Disappointment at its peak.
I went to the emergency room last month and was there all afternoon for treatment. The staff were very nice to me. I communicated as much as I could in Japanese. But, I returned for many follow-ups because my condition was not getting much better after 19 days of treatment.
After going through extensive testing throughout the month, I had a problem with a nurse. She would not believe me that I took a test at the hospital and checked it and then told me to do it once more while yelling at me.
When I took the test, it was so painful. So I continued telling her that I already took it and refused to take it once more. She clearly did not listen. It's not lovely when patients and staff are staring at you while you're trying to defend yourself. In the end, that test went through.
Another incident happened with that same nurse the final time I went there. Because my Japanese level was not very high, my boyfriend came to the hospital with me. This nurse was arrogant to my boyfriend and quickly told him to translate for me. He got extremely upset with her because there was not even an once of politeness in her tone and time to translate to me.
Whenever this nurse talked to me, she would raise her voice so loud at me. Before, it was yelling. Maybe there was some improvement in that nurse's character? I am not entirely sure. I am foreign woman. I am not a person who cannot hear. There's a difference. I suppose foreigners are deaf to her.
While waiting to get my medical records so that I could transfer to another hospital, there was a mentally disabled man that came inside the building. Naturally, he made loud noises that most normal people wouldn't say. But for some reason, many people, patients and hospital staff were laughing at his outbursts. I found that many people couldn't hold themselves from laughter.
Where is the professionalism of the hospital staff? Why does society disrespect the mentally challenged? I experienced a lot of static attitudes at this hospital that seemed medieval. I felt so sad when people were laughing. And then I said aloud in English while looking around the hospital, "Why are people laughing?" My boyfriend who is Japanese wasn't laughing. He also felt sad especially for the kind of social response that the caregiver had to go through.
I wish this hospital would train its staff on handling treatment of foreign patients and disabled patients more kindly. It would also help to have more language support with doctors since this hospital is in Ueno. Everything is in Japanese, and now that I am writing this it dawned on me that it would be very difficult to navigate where to go if I had no knowledge of Japanese at all.
Other factors that give it a low star rating is when making an appointment and finding it wasn't scheduled was frustrating. Waiting for care took a long time, so if someone comes here expect to spend most of the day here.
Using a foreign credit card for payment at the machine didn't work for me. If you need to use a credit card from a country other than Japan, make sure a clerk manually does the payment.
I was late to an appointment one time because I got the time mixed up. I was taking medicine that made me very tired and unfocused and I made a mistake. The receptionist was angry like a school teacher and I did apologize.
I have given this hospital 2 stars because the staff in the emergency room were very understanding, patient, and kind to me. No one wants to be in an emergency room because it is a frightening experience, but I was thankful that I got treatment from them.
I recommend that people who don't speak Japanese to NOT visit this hospital unless it's a serious emergency. This applies to a patient that is mentally disabled as well.
Final note, not everyone working here was rude or arrogant. It's just that I saw there was many things that could be improved while getting my treatment here.
On a good note, there was one nurse that remembered my face and name and even greeted me. My doctor was nice but communication was difficult for me.
This is the worst hospital I have ever been to. The attitude of the doctor with who I met was terrible, which made me doubt the doctors' professional quality. He did not say anything that can comfort patient and did not explain well the symptoms and reasons in response. The service of the hospital disappointed me as well. I would never recommend any of my friends to go there!!!
