Kyorin Daigaku was a wonderful experience. I had a serious leg infection and diabetes problem. The doctors were very efficient and clear between my poor Japanese and the different levels of English from the staff. The nurses and supporting staff were kind, efficient and made me happy. I was able to use my iPad and could connect to Internet. I was able to use Internet to help communicate with folks. I was in a large four bed room. One patient seemed to have a low level of pain control and often cried out when given treatment. I felt sorry for him. The food was very good, could watch television for small 200¥ fee. Because I have retired to Japan, I was in process of working with an American bank to close some business. Due to time difference, I could only contact them after midnight. I was allowed to call from the casual room so everything worked out I have Japanese insurance and since I was 75 years old, I only was required to pay 10% of the entire hospital fee...which was around 50,000¥...this included Dr's, nurses, food, room, special medicine. Just one 'all-inclusive' bill. I contacted my friends in USA to get an estimate of how much the cost would have been, even with senior insurance (Medicare) and was told the total would have been around Japanese yen ¥800,000...and they would only keep me in the hospital for 3-5 days. The reason for the expense is because every charge in american hospital is broken down, individually, charge for room, food, nurse, Doctor medicine etc...so it 'adds up very fast'. So, my Japanese friends, don't complain about medical care in your wonderful country. Thanks, especially, to Dr, Shimoda and her staff in dermatology.
