Komatsuji (Komatsu-dera): Best fall colors in this area -- awesome red momiji 紅葉 Japanese maple trees. An ancient Buddhist temple hidden in the hills. Lovely pond with "island" in middle. Delightfully mysterious and mystical atmosphere. Easy access from GREEN LINE agricultural road (actually a modern highway, but beware of open gutters on road shoulders) which runs from Shirahama JA （農協） north through a tunnel and continues to Kokonoe 九重 train station. Weekends during peak viewing season -- mid November -- are crowded and parking may be restricted to parking spaces along Green Line, from where you would need to walk. Komatsuji is on the left (west) at the bottom of a dip in the road when driving north on Green Line. Green Line may not be clearly marked on GPS (car navigation) map displays because it is not an "official" road.

nice temple, this spot is ideal for walk, around are small shrines, small pound. also parking+toilet.

It is a small and quiet temple in the mountains, but when you visit it in early autumn, it is a beautiful spot for autumn leaves. Since the parking lot near the temple has a small capacity, it is recommended to park in the parking lot where the sightseeing bus in front of you stops when it is crowded, without chilling in the narrow parking lot. Even when I visited in the fall of 2020, there were some typhoon damages from the previous year. I would like to recommend a gift when you visit, including support.

狭い道を入った所に有ります。 駐車場も駐車場？という感じですが、数台停められます。 道路には、この時期ならではのイチョウやモミジなどの落ち葉が落ちています。 紅葉の名所ということだったので、行ってみました。日没後はライトアップもされているようです。 歴史ある風情の佇まい。 天気の良い日だったので、このお寺の保護している猫もお昼寝していたり、のんびりと景色を楽しめました。 池？が台風なのか、ほとりが崩れていたのがそのままになっていて、暗くなったら危ない気がしました。早めに修復されるのを願います。

You can go anytime. Especially, the season of autumn leaves is the best 😃 One day, a colleague exhibited the autumn leaves of Komatsuji at a photo exhibition and was selected. I think that the goodness of the scenery contributed to the selection rather than the shooting technique 😁 I lived in Chikura about 30 years ago, but at that time it wasn't as famous as it is now 😅 At that time, I often went to pick up ginkgo trees and I only remember that I didn't like that peculiar smell. I never thought it would become famous as a tourist spot 😆
