Isaki Temple is located in the eastern side of Lake Biwa in Omihachiman City. The temple belongs to Tendai sect of Buddhism and it was established here in 859 by Saint Souoh. A priest called Ajari who is known as a great practitioner of Buddhist asceticism for completion 1,000 days training of hiking up and down Mt. Hiei in the west has once served the position of chef priest in this temple. This temple is most known for its ritual of diving into the lake from a long horizontal pole set from the mountain side along the lake held on August 1st. According to the legend, En no Gyōja who is the founder of Shugendō which is the path of ascetic training was led to this land by a bore and later set this place as a training ground Shugendo. This is the origin of this sacred ground. The main object of worship in this temple is a wooden statue of Fudo Myoho curved by Saint Souoh. Trans-word+ : TGM Japan Guide

It used to be possible to climb up the rocks to go out on The Pole to jump into the lake. A real fun activity on a hot summer's day. Now we are prevented from getting out on the pole from the rocks. Next year we'll bring a rope ladder!

Walk from the private parking lot. The approach is well maintained and easy to walk. On the way, there is the immovable Banza. It is also famous for its heroic rod-flying events.
