Perhaps the finest maintained campsite I’ve been to in Japan, in a gorgeous woodsy setting. You can choose from campsites that are nestled among trees, to those in large open fields. Cottages available, too. Stores, showers, baths, firewood, food, rental equipment all available on site. Only problems are that it’s super popular, and usually crowded, and because tents are pitched constantly, the grass is long gone on the campsites and you end up setting up on dirt. That can make for a muddy mess if it rains. But even then, they provide the use of free duckboards.
One of the best campsites in Japan! A lot to do for the kids -- trails, treehouses connected to each other, trampoline, etc. Smooth drive thru check-in and check-out. Shop sells most of the essentials, rental equipment are clean and in good condition. Shared facilities (toilets, kitchen, shower rooms were regularly cleaned. Garbage bags were provided. Social distancing and wearing a mask were imposed, and observed. Most of the tent area had electricity; we brought a hot carpet and survived freezing temperatures! Telework space was available (as of Nov 2020) with power source and decent WiFi speed.
Rented one of the log houses. Included kitchen, bath, toilet, stove inside. Outside under a roof was a fireplace and cooking stove.
Although it was raining most of the day and all night, it was the best and most comfortable camping I ever enjoyed!
For those with kids or dogs, there is plenty space to let them play while being able to watch them.
Friendly and helpful staff. English instructions too for those not able to read English.
Tip of the day: in Karuizawa there's a shop which makes saussages like in Germany. Get the "Bratwurst" and "Schweinewürstchen" . Absolutely fantastic for grilling.
