A short excursion outside of the main city area of Yonezawa brings you to this little temple dedicated to Senju Kannon, the 1000-armed Kannon. Known for hydrangeas, it can be crowded in June/July but is generally quiet at other times. The real attraction here is the main hall with its intricate carvings. Although the original was lost to fire, this was rebuilt in 1843 and is a priceless repository of the woodcarving traditions of the area.
Sasanoji, which belongs to the Toyoyama school of the Shingon sect and is called Chomeizan, is it overwhelmingly famous to call it "Sasano Kannon-do"? ⁉️
There are legends that Tokuichi Shojin, a famous person in the Tohoku region, was involved in the opening of "Tokuichi Jojin" and "Sakaue Tamura Maro", but it has a long history.
The Kannon Hall, which is also counted as the 33 Kannons of Okitama, is an old thatched-roof building, but it feels even dignified even after a long wind and snow. Also, the wooden sculptures centering on the eaves are elaborate and wonderful.
It is also famous as a hydrangea temple, and the contrast with the old temples is very nice in the season.
In front of the gate, there is a Sasano sword carving shop that is famous as a Yonezawa craft.
I went to the Sasano area. I remember going to Sasano-ji on an excursion when I was in elementary school. Although it was made of wood, it still had a solid and profound feeling.
June 20th, the best time to see hydrangea. Why don't you stop by after eating with Nadera?
It is a beautiful place of hydrangea.
