Excellently preserved Fortress diagonally opposite Minhla Fortress which can be seen from the ramparts of Gwechaung. Soldiers’ and Officers’ barracks and a huge tunnel constructed to house elephants all remain in near-perfect condition. Splendid panoramic views of the Ayeyarwaddy River, the farmlands and surrounding villages.
We came and left In a sedan vehicle via a 20 minute drive down a bumpy dirt road from the bridge to the south.
It is very definitely worth the effort to visit both Gwechaung and Minhla Fortress in one day.
A rare fortress built in the 1860s to serve as a bottleneck on the Ayeyarwaddy river. The Konbaung dynasty employed French, Italian and foreign-trained engineers to construct this and the better-known) Minhla fort (opposite side of the river). Both forts were among the very few places that put up resistance to the British during the Third and final Anglo-Burmese war (November 1885).

The road to the fort is quite rough and difficult for low-suspension vehicles (we went in from the south near Migyaungye / Malun bridge - that route is open only 6am to 6pm) and exited from the Magway-Taungdwingyi Highway. But every single bit worth it. Nice sunsets (but no lighting in the compound or the roads).
Although it is close to Magway side, the road is almost destroyed due to the cart. The crocodile police (on the other side of the bridge is Kyauk Chaw Road). When entering from Magway side, be careful of the Pagoda Hill branch road. The signpost is not visible. There is no one to fix it.
The road is not good
Bad road.
