Estudiantina guys are disrespectful and lack organization. I bought a couple of tickets to a guy with an “orange uniform with a cross in the chest” who said the callejoneada will start at 10:30pm. It turn out to be a kind of confusion (if I can name it), so the same people (from estudiantina groups) told us to join another group with another “uniform colors” at then end these people were not accepting our tickets and they were very rude to me calling me disrespectful when emphasizing that “it was a problem to fix by them”. My suggestion will be “don’t buy tickets until the very end” whenever you decide what estudiantina group you will like to follow...

The system is a hot mess. There are a bunch of different guys selling tickets, supposedly for different group; they tell you they have "almost no place left" bit in reality there's no limit of people per group and it doesn't matter for which group you got the tickets. My group had about 200 people and it was impossible to stay near the music group and hear their music or anything they said. It would have been nice with less people, so I recommend NOT buying the ticket beforehand and waiting until the crowd gathers. If it's a small group (under 40), then buy the ticket, otherwise just walk around the callejones on your own, you'll catch a bit of the music groups here and there anyway.

An excellent experience if you visit Guanajuato. I recommend it, I loved it.

These tours have the potential to be great, as is already attested in other reviews. The group dynamic is lively, the sites are beautiful, the music is good, it's romantic, etc. The only problem is the crowd size. Make sure your tor group doesn't exceed 40 people (MAXIMUM). My group had 200+ people and it was impossible to hear what the tour guides said. In fact, most of the time I was pushed to the back of the swarming mass of tourists, not even able to see the musicians. The route made things even worse: being shoved through the tiny alleyways made one feel like a cow being led into a slaughter yard. Lastly, I was promised a delightful blue ceramic frog with a miner's helmet for attending; I was instead given a generic green one. I highly recommend the people in charge of this limit the number of people who go on each tour.

These are roving parties, traditionally held by the students of the University of Guanajuato with live musicians. It was a live dramatic experience and musical experience. One of the highlights of my trip to Mexico.
