Rent a Car Tijuana Mex

Beware the scams and deception. I rented a car with Mex from Tijuana airport from Jan 1st to 10th. While the car was fine, I ended up paying US$288 more than quoted at booking due to their deliberately deceptive scamming. There were two major ways they inflated the cost to result in extra costs. The first was insurance. I had booked using the priceline/rentalcars.com website, which provides inclusive collision insurance which at booking appears to be provided through Mex but in fact is provided by rentalcars.com. Mex had provided terms and conditions which were sent to me with the booking that suggested the included insurance was sufficient, but on arrival, Mex was clear that unless we wanted to leave a security deposit of over US$1000, we would have to buy their insurance at an extra cost of US$204. My impression is that this scam is one where the blame lies partly with Mex and partly with rentalcars.com. The two have a mutually beneficial relationship whereby rentalcars.com sells cheap insurance that is effectively useless because you also have to pay with Mex when you arrive to pick up the car (or leave a very large security deposit). The wording of the Mex terms and conditions is deliberately deceptive, leading one to think the insurance is in fact with Mex, when its not. After arguing with the Mex agent in tijuana for about 45mins, I cut my losses and decided to just pay for the extra insurance, as it was getting late and I was not in the mood to try out a different rental agency at that point. But then came the second and most outright scam. To this point, all costs had been quoted and calculated in US dollars. The Mex account breakdown shows all costs in US$ and the agent and I had discussed all costs in US$ to this point. But when it finally came to payment, they converted all the costs to Mexican pesos at an exchange rate of 22:1, and then they only allow payment in pesos. Because the real exchange rate was under 20:1 at the time, this amounted to a more than 10% extra on top of the entire cost. They were using an exchange rate that was 6 months old. A really sad example of company behavior.

Gouged on price the most expensive car I ever rented in my life. It’s easy to take advantage of someone when you don’t speak or read the language. You would think that being on the border you would have bilingual paperwork should have known it was a scam. Had I read other reviews before I rented I would have walked away. Next time your in the us all come visit you and discuss this face to face!

Excellent Services and low cost

I called all the others.. they had the best price by about 100 dollars less per weekly rental.. staff was friendly very helpful.. they suggested I take an Uber.. they requested it for me. it’s cheaper to get to the border vs a taxi.. 50 pesos,, highly recommended

This place is a complete scam!!! Beware!! We were lured into this establishment by a reservation made through the airline. When we arrived to the office of this so called car rental company, they added fees upon fees almost triplicating the price quoted in the reservation. They argued that it was the added insurance which according to the attendant. Is compulsory. I tried to explain that this insurance is provided by my credit card company and that I didn't want it or need it. But they refused to take it off the bill, the "optional" insurance fee is 200% the price of the rental fee. We decided to decline their scamish offer and rented a really good car from the competition just across the street. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!!!
