Former barn of the Las Ánimas hacienda, formerly called Nuestra Señora del Socorro, Xalapa, Veracruz “The property did not have large tracts of land, however it knew how to adapt to the coffee boom at the beginning of the 20th century. The agrarian reform did not affect it, becoming a large property of coffee farms, one of the most important in the region; still a few decades ago it functioned as a coffee mill. On August 22, 1919, Don Justo Fernández acquired the “Las Animas” farm, its annexed land “Agua Santa” and the ranch called “Las Trancas de Pancho”, properties located east of Xalapa, with an area of 1,352 hectares which were intended for grazing and there was a mill. Don Justo changes the use of the land, becoming the pioneer of coffee cultivation in the Xalapa area, at the same time enriching the environment with trees that he sows. Towards the year 1926, the aforementioned area was affected by 500 hectares and in 1936, his son, Justo F. Fernández López, gave his collaborators 550 hectares, keeping only 300 hectares. In 1974, Don Justo F. Fernández made the historic decision to divide and give Xalapa an urban development of a residential type. Currently, Fraccionamiento Las Animas, Jardines de las Animas, Fuentes de las Animas, among others. Reference: From the hacienda to the ejido. Chronicles of a divided territory.
