The Maurits State Mine was located in Lutterade, Geleen (now Sittard-Geleen), and was the largest coal mine in the Netherlands. Until the construction of the third shaft in 1958, it was also the largest two-shaft mine in the world. After the mine was closed in 1967, DSM, which had already established the Maurits coking plant and the nitrogen bonding company (SBB) on the mine site in 1929, also established its new petrochemical branch on the site. This is now the southern part of the Chemelot business park. The northern part is still dominated by inorganic chemistry, just like at the time of the State Mine.
