A small settlement at the edge of the Bialowieza Forest began to transform into a city after the First World War, when the wood industry developed in Hajnówka. The time of real dynamic development, however, came in the seventies, eighties and nineties. The number of city residents exceeded 25,000. This was mainly due to the migration of people from nearby, mostly Orthodox villages. The only church so far in Hajnówka, in the Holy Trinity, was not able to guarantee the right conditions for prayer for the ever-increasing number of believers. The idea of building the next Orthodox churches was born. In 1994, the land plot at Warszawska Street, with an area of 0.30 ha, was purchased from the "Dział" building cooperative, with the intention of building a new church. The vicar of the Hajnówka parish p. Saint. Trinity, ks. Jerzy Ackiewicz. In December of the same year, a construction committee was set up. The construction site has been secured by a fence. On the second day of Easter (April 24) in 1995, a place was erected for the construction of the church and burial of the cross in the place where the altar will be made, made by the dean of the Hajnówka district, late Fr.. Mitrata Antoni Dziewiatowski. On June 3, 1995, His Eminence, p. Metropolitan Basil, assisted by a large number of clergy and the multitude of the faithful, laid the cornerstone for the construction of the church. The next day construction works began, carried out with great verve and commitment. The result of these intense efforts was the rapid formation of the lower, underground temple that allows the celebration of the Divine Liturgy. It was celebrated for the first time on the second day of Christmas, January 8, 1996. From that day, to this day, the Holy Liturgy is exercised regularly. 30 April 1996 by virtue of the decree of His Eminence p. Metropolitan Bazyli was established in Hajnówka an independent parish of the Holy Great Martyr Dymitr of Thessaloniki. Choosing a patron for an erected parish was not accidental. In Hajnówka for many years, there was a tradition of owning the patrons of particular districts of the city. The district known as "Judaica", looked for its guardian in the Holy Martyr Dmitri. The first parish priest was Fr. mitrat Jerzy Ackiewicz, he fulfills this honorable function to the present day. On November 8, 1996, on the day of the memory of the patron of the parish, the lower church was ordained. The act of ordination was made by p. Metropolitan Basil. St. Seraphim from Sarowa became the patron of the underground temple. Construction of the church of Saint Dimitri developed with great impetus. The walls of the new temple grew in the eyes. Thanks to the priest's operability and his extraordinary ability to make contacts, the parish gained serious sponsors in the country and abroad. Thanks to their generous gifts, the church has been enriched with liturgical utensils, priest's vestments, a set of bells and crosses crowning the dome of the temple. The most generous donors were ś. p. Nina Kowalczuk from Berlin and Basil Piwnik from Warsaw. The financial burden of building the church rested mainly on parishioners. They did not spare their victims. Many have sacrificed time and health with perseverance. Groups of carollers collecting money during the Christmas period were organized. Many devoted people were involved in acquiring the material means necessary to build the church. Their strength and perseverance were the driving force behind the further development of the Church of Saint Dimitri. On November 8, 1998, the dedication and deposition of the cross crowning the main dome of the church took place. Dedication was made by His Eminence Metropolitan Sawa. The dome of the church was made by the late Mikołaj Dudzicz from the village of Kojły and his helpers. The church was entirely covered with a copper sheet. The contractors of this very precise work were the brothers Wierszko from the village of Stare Lewkowo.

The church was built in 1995-2007. On June 3, 1995, the cornerstone was laid for the construction of the church. In 1996, the lower church was consecrated, where the Holy Liturgies were already held. In 2000, an oak iconostasis was installed in the already erected main church. A brick, two-level church was covered with a copper roof with two domes and crosses. The floor inside the temple is made of granite.
