The history of Stary Żagań dates back to the 12th century and is associated with the pre-settlement market-type settlement existing here, located near the Castellan stronghold guarding the crossing of Bóbr. This stronghold was mentioned in 1202. Presumably the inconvenient location became the reason (in the first half of the 13th century, the city was moved to the vicinity of the present downtown of Żagań. For the first time Stary Żagań appears in a document from 1284 under the name Antignum Saganum. Then the village appeared as Alt Sagan, and from 1404 until 1945 it was called Altkitch.

One of the oldest churches in Lubusz, first half of the 12th century. It was here to be Żagań, but they changed their minds. 😀
