Ignacy Hryniewicki came from a nearby town who, as a student of the University of St. Petersburg, assassinated Tsar Alexander II in 1881. In the center of St. Petersburg, at the site of the assassination, the Church of the Savior on Blood stands.

Historical sources mention the first temple in Hryniewiczach Duży already in 1571. It was an Orthodox church. Soon, after 1596, the Hryniewicz surrendered to the Brest Union, becoming faithful to the Catholic church in the Eastern Rite. Unicka church St. Elijah was first described in 1727. Hryniewicze has several interesting characters in his history. Here was born Ignacy Daniłowicz - a professor at the University of Vilnius as well as the second Ignacy-Hryniewiecki, a student of the St. Petersburg University assassin on Tsar Alexander II. The first church of St. Elijah burned down in 1915. The current cemetery church was built in the 1950s. It belongs to the parish of the Dormition of the Holy Mother of God in Bielsk Podlaski, in the deanery of Bielsk Podlaski of the Warsaw-Bielsko diocese of the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church.
