The beginning of the parish of Saint Alexander dates back to 1710, when the construction of a small wooden church began. It was supposed to be a small, public chapel for the village of Suwałki. From 1788, the wooden chapel functions as the church of the Suwałki parish. Suwałki developed quickly, and a small wooden church was not enough for the needs of the city. Parish chronicles say that Tsar Alexander I, going to Warsaw for the coronation, noticed a wooden church leaning towards ruin. So he ordered a significant amount of money to build a new stone church. A new brick church in the classical style was built in 1825 as a cathedral temple dedicated to Saint Alexander, pope and martyr. Inside the temple there are paintings by Franciszek Smuglewicz and plaques commemorating the struggle and martyrdom of the inhabitants of Suwałki Region.
