Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul

at the edge of the former geometrical park, in the vicinity of the remains of the "winemaker's house" and the Blue Gate stands the age-old church of St. Piotr and Paweł. He stood here long before the park was created, because it is one of the earliest, if not the oldest of the temples preserved in Żary. It was built in the borough, in the place of a wooden church mentioned in 1207. Field stone and turf ore blocks were used as raw material. It is modest, even raw. It has a pointed, gable roof and a baroque turret-turret made in 1702. It comes from the 13th century. Inside, there is a cross and network vault from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. It used to be surrounded by a church cemetery. This area, as part of the project "Protect the past - shape the future" was tidied up by students from the Automotive School Complex in Żary and the Wirtschaftinstitut Mentil-Naumann in Lübenau. The church is today a branch chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus parish. Masses are celebrated there on Sundays at 9.00. The old temple also has its place on the Żary legend trail. As it happens in such stories - more fantasy in it than reality, but it is worth devoting a few words to it. During the time of the Promnitzes it was supposed to live near the Black Governor's Church (so-called not only for cloudy beauty and black hair, but also for a nasty character). His family was replaced by cats - seven demonic, supernatural skills of black males. When he had to say goodbye to this world, it turned out that the Steward's soul had no intention of following the body. Turning into a black (and how!) Cat jumped out of the caravan, then she settled in the window of the tenement house and, having taken the human form again, watched the funeral ceremony. The dead man was buried in the cemetery by the church described above. It was not a good idea because every night the poor man (along with the cats) went crazy around the area: he destroyed graves, broke flowers, pulled out crosses ... It was decided to dig up the casket and move outside the city walls. As this did not bring the expected effect, the Governor was dug out again and taken deep into the forest. He still scare him there, so if you come across a place called 'Wild Clearing' near Żary, you better take your legs by the belt and do it as soon as possible.
