The parish was established by the bishop of Lublin on September 25, 1990. It covered mainly the area of the Gwarek housing estate, in the western part of the city, and the site for the construction of parish buildings was designated at John Paul II Square. At that time, a significant number of parishioners were professionally involved in mining. She commuted to work to the coal mine in Bogdanka (Łęczyński poviat). According to earlier plans, this part of Chełm was to quickly expand its borders, becoming a large mining settlement (today much fewer families live from working in the mine). The created parish, by excluding the territory from the parish of St. Kazimierz, was to serve the pastoral care mainly of this developing community. On August 27, 1994, the parish boundaries were expanded, five more streets and the Primary School No. 7 were added. Ultimately, the parish boundaries were established only in 1998. The temporary chapel, with a residential part, intended for the construction of the church, was designed by the Chełm architect Wojciech Palka, built at the end of 1990 (building permit issued in October this year). It is a one-story building with a gable roof, covered with sheet metal, hipped in the residential part, of traditional construction. The walls were built of ceramic bricks (the so-called checkers), plastered (with cement-lime plaster). From the side of the presbytery there is a residential part and the premises of the parish office.
