Years ago it was a military church built at the turn of the 1840s and 1850s by the tsarist army. We date the operation of the church to 1852. From the first half of the 20th century, the church became a council and was the only one that was not changed into a Catholic church. Inside the church, there are numerous icons, figures and paintings that were obtained from numerous liquidated Chełm churches. An architecturally interesting church is also visited by Catholics because of the cultural and historical richness of this place. The area around the church is clean and well-kept.

Co-cathedral church of St. Jan Teologa - orthodox co-cathedral and parish church in Chełm. It belongs to the Chełm deanery of the Lublin-Chełm diocese of the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church [2]. It is the only active Orthodox church in Chełm [3]. The temple was built in 1846–1852 with funds earmarked by the Russian government as a military church. In 1864, due to the increase in the number of Orthodox inhabitants of the city resulting from the influx of Russian officials and military personnel, it changed its function, becoming a parish temple. After Poland regained independence, it was the only church in Chełm that was not restored to the Catholic Church or destroyed. In 1928 she received the honorary rank of the council.
