Very nice building, kept in great condition.
Already in the Middle Ages the then fire brigade had its headquarters at the Olsztyn town hall, while the inhabitants were imposed a number of obligations related to fire protection. Unfortunately, these orders were not meticulously followed, which in consequence led to frequent fires. The largest took place in 1620, when almost the entire city burned down.
In the nineteenth century, firefighters received a new headquarters and these were abandoned rooms of the former prison and detention center at the Upper Gate. Unfortunately, there was no back room for firefighters. At the beginning of the 20th century, a decision was made to build a completely new facility for the needs of firefighting and it was located in the Lower Suburb at the Horse Market, right at the junction of the largest communication node. Today it is ul. Independence and adjacent to it street. Michał Lengowski.
The design of the new fire station was entrusted to the city architect Max Boldt and the implementation of these plans was carried out at a rapid pace. In April 1909, Boldt presented the results of his work and construction works began in May so that on November 30 the same year, the building was officially opened. The fire station, just like the New Town Hall, was built in the Neo-Renaissance style with small Baroque elements and has a very interesting block. The building is multi-storey with a usable attic, in one corner an outbuilding with a glass gallery on the first floor and the other corner is a four-sided massive tower. A clock was installed on the tower and an alarm siren on its ridge.
Originally, next to the fire station, a stable for 20 horses was erected with a hay warehouse and a veterinary point. now these rooms are used as garages. Also noteworthy is the front facade in the basement, four large double doors have survived through which units used to extinguish in the past.
A curiosity from the early years of the firehouse is the fact that the first deputy of the guard's commandant was David Mendelsohn, the father of Erich, a world-famous architect born in Olsztyn. Nowadays, this facility performs the same function and the Provincial Rescue and Fire Fighting Unit No. 1 of the State Fire Service is stationed in the adjacent area.
In 1989 the firehouse was entered in the register of monuments, and in 1990 it underwent a major renovation.
Always 5 stars for the guards, always the first and most helpful.
Historic fire station - an architectural gem worth seeing.
