The nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were characterized by high infant mortality in Prussia. In connection with this situation, German Empress Augusta Wiktoria appealed to the city authorities to open special orphanages for infants.
In Bydgoszcz, where infant mortality reached 22%, such a facility was built in 1908-1909 at the current Pl. Kościeleckich. The orphanage - designed by the town councilor Carl Meyer - was financed by rentier Julius Berger and at his request called "Auguste-Viktoria-Heim". In the orphanage building, health and care facilities in various forms operated until the end of the 20th century. Since 2000, it houses the Provincial Culture and Art Center "Old Orphanage" with the Gallery of Folk and Non-Professional Art.
