Today, about 20,000 the inhabitants of Lubsko received the location privilege in 1288 from the hands of Henry the Dignitary, margrave Meissen and Lower Lusatia. It was a significant market settlement before. Thanks to its location on the trade route, at the crossing of Lubsza, it developed very dynamically. Fortunately, it avoided the destruction of World War II and today it delights with valuable monuments: the 16th-century Renaissance town hall designed by Antonio Alberti, a Gothic parish church from the mid-13th century. Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, as well as the remainder of the medieval defensive walls - the Tower of City Cones and the castle probably from the 15th-16th centuries, rebuilt many times by subsequent owners. In Lubsko, a Sorbian humanist and poet of the Renaissance was born Jan Rak - son of a clothier, known as Rhagius Aesticampianus or Jan Sommerfeld the Younger (1475-1520). He was the precursor of Slavic studies and the author of the Song about Lusatia. He lectured at many European universities, including he was a professor at the Krakow Academy. A commemorative plaque embedded in one of the walls of the town hall reminds that he was born in Lubsko. Another outstanding figure associated with Lubsko is the 1939 Nobel Prize winner Gerhard Domagk, discoverer of sulfonamides. He spent his youth in Lubsko (1901-1909) - he lived in a house at present street Gazowa and he studied at the Lubusz school. He received the Nobel Prize in physiology and medicine only in 1947. It was caused by Adolf Hitler's prohibition of accepting this award from Germany after his dispute with the Nobel Committee. Contemporary young residents of Lubsko pride themselves on famous ladies more than outstanding husbands. The first of them is the well-known singer Ewelina Flinta, who was born in Lubsko. The second is the famous Magda M., or actress Joanna Brodzik. Although she was born in Krosno Odrzańskie, she spent her childhood in Lubsko and in press interviews speaks warmly about the city and its inhabitants. The actress supports the Festival of Special Care Children and Youth, which has been taking place in Lubsko for several years. In 2005 she received the title of "Honorary Citizen of the Town and Commune of Lubsko". It is also worth mentioning that another famous lady came from the area of Lubsko, from nearby Dłużek (German: Dolzig): Augusta Victoria - wife of Wilhelm II Hohenzollern, the last German emperor.
