A two Euro entry fee is appropriate for this museum as its very small, three rooms, but is still worth a look for the history/military history buff. Armour and heavy muskets in one room and details about the local military history, similar exhibits in the main room and some assorted modern weaponry in the last room as well as some history of the involvement of Portugal in the First and Second World Wars. Assistance is provided by language cards that accompany each of the displayed exhibits.
Until now the only Museum that explain the history of Madeira from a Discovery point of view..
This museum is cheap to enter (€3,00/€1,50), centrally located, and can be done in under an hour. There's some interesting material focusing on the history of Portuguese expansion and warfare, the Napoleonic Wars and their impact on Madeira, right up to the futile wars to hold onto colonies and the modern day. The items exhibited include guns, cannon, swords, and everything else you'd expect.
The one drawback is that some elements could have been better maintained. The laminated sheets with English/German/French translations showed some signs of wear and the label had fallen off one of the exhibits.
Overall an interesting, quick, cheap museum which is worth a visit if you're interested in the subject.
Decent small museum. Youre not allowed to take photos, I don’t know if thats because they don’t want photos of antique guns spreading, or if its to show how small the museum is.
There is alot of good explainatory descriptions to each item, but the number of items isnt big.
But for the entrance fee of 2€ it seemed a fair price.
Only €3 and well worth the visit. Run by the military itself and their displays are very diverse and well presented.
