We loved the place! we stayed two nights at first, that try and stay at other campsites on the island and came back and stayed another week, this one is by far the best one. It is such a peaceful place, and the owner, Renato, really grows on you. Alot of respect to the man for building this beautiful place. If you want to do activities around the island, you can just ask him, he has alot of good contacts and friends in right places. And yes there is ofcourse the deal with the gate. I'm surprised that people make such a big deal out of this, Renato gives you the entry code right away, much like you would in a hostel, and you can just enter and leave whenever you want. I highly recommend this place!

It will be unpopular opinion but I'll take a risk to say: Renato is a nice guy. But let's start from the beginning. So when me and my hubby were doing some research about Azores and where to stay, we found this campsite. I didn't read about it at all, I just made a pin on our Google maps and we decided to go there. We arrived after 6pm and got invited in. Renato explained all his rules and showed us camping site. Well, to me it was good because everyone knows how to place works and what to do. There's no such thing as stealing from the fridge etc. Good. The gate was closed for all the time, that gave us more safety. We set our tent and went away, then we came back and spent the evening on a kind of balcony, you have to go upstairs on a football pitch and you can see the ocean. Place was pretty peaceful at night excluding some concert/karaoke (?) live somewhere. But didn't really care much as we were pretty tired. Toilets were smelling nice (yes, really) and showers had a hot water all the time. On our second day we spent a most of it outside the camping and came back around 5-6pm. We spent some time at the reception (many useful tips about travelling around the island) then went to read a book on football pitch. We had some drinks too and Renato brought us some peppermint to add to our drinks. That was funny. I liked the idea of putting a flag on the roof of the house because of guests' nationality. We've been asked about our nationality and then our flag has been put up along with German, Slovakian and some other ones. The whole camping site is just wow. For me that's pretty impressive. Football pitch, some mobile houses, tents and even small vans to rent, banana trees plantation and all. I really like the fact of being environmentally friendly with rain water in the toilets. Well, this camping site is not for everyone. Prices are slightly higher because it's kind of a "posh" camping where you have hot water everywhere, fridges, kitchen, place where you can dry your clothes under the roof etc. Renato was a little bit eccentric but he didn't do anything wrong to us, he wasn't rude at all. No one else from te camping seemed to have any problems too. When I read all those reviews I didn't know what to say. I was so shocked!!! If I knew, I wouldn't go there and that would be such a pity! Take a risk and go there. You won't regret.

Comparisons with prison, obsession about rules...all sound just like that guy. Trying to check in we had the same “do not let anyone in” situation which some other guys really got a lengthy prayer for. Sat in the car and went our way. And that’s the only recommendation we can give.
