The stele of memory and grief was opened on May 9, 2001 in memory of 11 crews, 67 pilots who died in peacetime while mastering the new technology. When the monument was opened, the Eternal Flame was lit. The right to light the Eternal Flame was granted to the Guard Lieutenant Colonel Yu. M. Deineko. The author of the memorial is the architect A. Shtyrko1. Its central element is a tall stele with a golden star on top. Polygonal plates installed on both sides of it adorn the names and titles of the dead Engels pilots. The monument was erected in the Letniy Gorodny microdistrict, where the Engels air base is concentrated. Cosmonauts, including Y. Gagarin, once trained there before the first flight into space. Every year, on the Victory Day on May 9, veterans, relatives of the dead, military personnel, pilots, schoolchildren and just ordinary people come here to lay flowers and a minute of silence to honor our contemporaries, who provide us with a peaceful sky. In June, representatives of the administration of the Leninsky district of the city of Samara and the best young men of the 132 schools of the city of Samara visited here.

A stele of memory and sorrow appeared in Engels, Saratov Region in 2001. The monument was erected in the residential district of Letny Gorod, where the Engels-1 air base is located. There once cosmonauts trained, including Yuri Gagarin, before the first flight into space. The author of the project is considered the local famous sculptor A. Shtyrko. The stele is dedicated to all those soldiers who died while testing new equipment in peacetime. In total, there are 11 crews in Engels, which were controlled by almost 70 people. All their names are embossed on a marble slab made in the shape of a fighter. From the side you can see the nose and wings of the TU-160 bomber. The official opening took place in the summer of June 22 on the day of remembrance and sorrow. The entire garrison of the air base gathered on the square in the Flight City. The right to light an eternal flame near the stele was given to Lieutenant Colonel Yu. M. Daineko, who died two years later, catapulting during a bomber check. His name on the plate of the stele was embossed in 2003.
