Another beautiful Sephardic synagogue in Kef , don’t be confused because it has the same name as El Ghriba Synagogue in Djerba

This Synagogue was the Synagogue of my paternal family. My father was a child when he played in those alleys. My grandfather, Rabi Peretz Allouche, was the Rabbi of this Synagogue. They had a house attached to it and they lived in there. My grandfather was sent there by Rabbi Haim Houri to lead the spiritual life of the Jewish community there. In 1956, after most of the community left to France and Israel, my grandfather took off with his family to the capital city of Tunisia and from there to France and Israel. I remember since I was born all the stories about this place, about the street and then neighbors. The fact that I can see it through this app makes me very happy.

It was sad to find the synagogue which is a national patrimoine at that miserable situation. It was dry with broken windows and doors. There were no concierge. I think authorities should ameliorate the location for its high value.

The interior is not very big, but very beautiful! Azure blue and gold mosaic decors make the interior even more sumptuous. You can sit on the benches, contemplate the scenery, enjoy the calm and also enjoy the freshness. While you are there, visit the other part of the small village: Djerbahood!
