One of the most beautiful cities in Tozeur , it has a rich history especially that a huge member of jewish tunisians used to live there and it's what explains the existence of the star of David in some doors.
Though there are currently no Jewish families living in the area, it has been home to Jews throughout history.
A small Jewish community was still active there during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
By the mid-to-late 19th century, Jews were trading in dates and also working as tailors and jewelers . Most of the date orchards were owned by the Touitou family, a wealthy family that headed the Jewish community in the town.
Between the World Wars, the Jewish population of Nefta , Tozeur stood at approximately 150 people . Though they were mostly left unharmed during World War II. The economic conditions led many families to immigrate to Israel.
While there are no longer Jews in the area, their presence lives on in the remains that they left behind.
Not much to see in the medina.
Nefta whose most important district was once "Essoug" the market and which contained Dar el-Bey the representative house of Beylical power.
The most important districts are:
* Chorfa
* Ouled Chérif
* Beni Zid
* Beni Ali
* Alagma
* Zebda
* Omaada
* Zaouiet Sidi Ahmed
* Messaaba
Note the presence of a large Jewish community who lived in the Beni Zid and Ouled Chérif neighborhoods.
Until today we can see old doors bearing as decoration with nails: the Star of David because most of the carpenters at the time were Jewish.
Authentic Tunisia deep full of tradition. Refreshing and natural lemonade with bottled water in the center. Impressive palm grove with demonstration of palm climbing, sweet liquor tasting and smoking a pipe without Nicotine, horse carriage transfers, highly recommended
One of the most well preserved medina
