It speaks for itself.. It could use a little maintenance.
The church was built atop the ruins of an old Carthaginian temple dedicated to Eshmun, the Punic god of healing. This temple was the last stand of Carthaginians against invading Romans. They fought a desperate and hopeless battle as the temple burnt down around them and the rest of their city had been destroyed. Yet another example of Christians building their churches atop the ruins of earlier holy sites as statements of dominance and intolerance. Perhaps one day a Pagan Temple will be built atop the ruins of the Vatican.
This Catherdral was built atop the ruins of an old temple dedicated to the Punic god of healing “Eshmun” !
The Acropolium, also known as Saint Louis Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic church located in Carthage. The cathedral sits on the peak of Byrsa Hill, near the ruins of the ancient Punic and then Roman city. It was built atop the ruins of an old temple dedicated to Eshmun, the Punic god of healing.
