One of the two coastal pavilions of Topkapı Palace in Sarayburnu was Sepetciler Pavilion and the other was Yalı Pavilion. This pavilion which is the only one to have reached our day among the pavilions, mansions and coastal palaces of the exterior garden and coast of the palace, was constructed by Sultan Ibrahim in 1643. lt was renovated comprehensively in the era of Mahmud l (1730 - 1751) in 1739. In spite of several maintenances, it was able to survive until the mid of 19th century without major changes. However, in a photo taken by Robertson during the Crimean War it is seen that the open divanhane of Sepetciler Pavilion was totally closed and all of the corbels were removed and the building seemed like a barrack. The importance of Sepetciler Pavilion for the life in Istanbul was to harbor imperial rowboats.
It's located at Sarayburnu area in Eminönü neighborhood, at the entrance of the Golden Horn. The Kiosk was built in the 16th century by Sultan Murat III within the grounds of Topkapi Palace and was renovated by Sultan Mahmud I in 1739. It was also used as a boat house for imperial boats where the sultans used to watch their navy leaving or returning from a campaign. During the Republic era, the Sepetciler Kiosk was used as an army pharmacy and than left empty until its restoration in the late 1980's. Today, a section of the pavilion serves as the International Press Center of the General Directorate of Press, and another section is a popular restaurant and night club. The restaurant is open everyday and gets very busy for Sunday brunches, but the Press Center is not open to the general public.
