Traveling by bus in Kiev is pretty easy and people are very helpful. With google.maps, download an offline map beforehand so that you can always follow on your mobile phone where the bus is leading you and where you want to get off. Tickets are sold directly on the bus by ticket sellers, not to the bus driver. So just get in and go straight to the ladies. You can recognize them by their uniform. But don't forget, the ticket still has to be validated manually. I posted a picture right away. I like to go by bus in other cities and countries because I am the closest to the local population and at the same time see the most of the city. In Kiev there are e.g. very very nice and great street art.
