At the beginning of the XIX century. the first church was built on Zabalka - wooden, in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. The temple was built on a vacant lot of the highest place in the area. At first, it was a church at the naval military hospital, later, in 1819, it was transferred to the jurisdiction of the diocesan authorities and it became a parish. There is a legend that in 1780 the old hospital church by Prince G.A. Potemkin donated the image of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, which was the reason for the consecration of the temple of the same name. In 1842, at a new location, in the center of the new market square, the stone church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. It was erected in the traditional classical style; in the east and west it was decorated with four-column porticoes. The majestic structure is crowned with a high spherical dome on an octagonal drum and a bell tower in two tiers. The church was consecrated on May 9, 1842 by Archbishop Gabriel (Rozanov) of Kherson and Tauride. During the Crimean War of 1853-1856, the funeral service for the defenders of Sevastopol, who died in Kherson hospitals, was held in the church.

Cathedral interior
Until 1917, this church housed a parish primary school, where children of the "lower" strata of the population were taught to read and write. In the first post-revolutionary years, the church of St. Nicholas became the first Renovationist church in Kherson, but Renovationism in Kherson did not last long.
In the 1920s, the temple was completely plundered, and all church valuables were seized. At the end of 1929, the bells were removed, only small bells that hung in the narthex of the temple survived. In 1932, the church was closed and until 1941 it was used as a grain warehouse, technical workshops, a garage for tractors.
In the church fence of the church are the graves of Bishop Paul (Koloskov), Archpriest Vasily (Pasenko), Archpriest John Goryanov, Priest Nikolai Zamsha, Church head Joachim Myasnikov and several other unknown persons.

Consecration of the mosaic image of St. Nikolay
In May 2007, in connection with the 165th anniversary of its consecration, the Nikolsky Cathedral received the status of the Naval Cathedral. On this day, Archbishop John of Kherson and Tauride donated a particle of the relics of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. In 2009, for the feast day, the bell tower of the cathedral was restored, the dome was covered with golden damask iron.
On May 22, 2015, Archbishop John of Kherson and Tauride consecrated a monument to St. Nicholas of Mirliki, installed in the fence of the cathedral.
On August 1, 2017, Metropolitan of Kherson and Tauride John consecrated the mosaic image of St. Nicholas on the altar wall of the church.

A holy place, grace, pacification, tranquility, a good location for us, wonderful priests, everyone, we partake, baptize, repent, pray, walk, walk and, God willing, we will walk. For sins are immeasurable and repentance is not broken. God forgive the sinful fool.
A very nice temple with a very kind and spiritually warm atmosphere ....
I recommend this cathedral to everyone, it is a good city that will help everyone who needs it, some so on loan.
I miss when at sea. But in my heart I know very well that in the church they are praying for you, and it becomes very easy when, upon returning home, you again see the golden domes of the temple, and when you go inside and see all the priests and parishioners, only prayer and gratitude to the Lord for everyone is on the lips !! ! Thank God for everything! I love this temple !!!!!
