St. Pokrovsky Cathedral was designed by the famous architect A.I. Melnikov in the place of the old Little Russian (that is, Ukrainian) Nicholas Church at the expense of the parishioners and the "benefit from the treasury" allocated by the Bessarabian viceroy Count M. S. Vorontsov by order of Emperor Nicholas I. The bells are cast from Turkish guns. The largest bell weighing 700 pounds.
